The biblical concept of slavery as natural and God-given continues to shape society today. The Old Testament legitimises, among others, systematic sexual exploitation under the guise of the law (Deuteronomy 21). According to a report published in 2010 by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the number of slaves is rising; there are around 140,000 slaves in Europe and several million worldwide. People are often lured away from their homes and then forced into prostitution and forced labour.
